Luckily, Hue&Cry is pretty good about using unused gems for our social posts or doing a director’s cut, so our beloved designs don’t go to waste.Īrt directing requires a lot of multi-tasking, organization, clear communication and a bit of patience. The difference between being an artist and a designer is that we design for the client, not for ourselves, so we have to learn to let it go. As an artist, it can be disheartening - especially when you and your teammates know how awesome that frame or sequence was - but that’s the reality of this job. I hate it when our favorite bits of a project are either eliminated or changed drastically. It’s always so rewarding to see characters breathe life and watch as scenes transform and transition seamlessly from one to the next. Just like design, the intricacies of movement and animation have a huge impact on story, personality and intent. The simplest of designs can be elevated just by the way it moves. My favorite part of the job is seeing design frames come to life. But I’ve learned through this process that I have to instill trust in my coworkers to do their job and let that culminate into something beautiful, even if it’s not exactly how I envisioned it - and it can pleasantly surprise you. I do consider myself to be a perfectionist at times, and it can be hard to let go of control when I know I can do things faster myself and exactly the way I want it. Being a good art director sometimes requires you to let go. You’d think that being an art director means you have artistic control over everything, but that’s not true. What would surprise people about what falls under that title? It requires skills in both leadership and management because in order to output a cohesive design style created by multiple artists, I need to be able to communicate effectively. This means helping the team brainstorm ideas, creating a look deck to reference for prescriptive info on style and color, delegating tasks, and making sure the client’s needs are in line with our designs. Can you talk about what being art director at Hue&Cry entails?įrom a project’s fruition to end, I oversee the artistic direction, making sure we produce high-quality design with attention to detail, color and composition to help tell a brand’s story.
